Become a Judge: Master the International Technical Rules System

Play a pivotal role in this attractive competitive system of historical fencing and work towards becoming a certified judge at the Tournament of Defense. Whether you’re a competitor aiming to elevate your strategic game, an aspiring judge ready to make informed and consistent calls, or an experienced official seeking to level up your certification, this course is your gateway to mastery.

Join us for a focused training session led by Maestro Francesco Lodà, where you’ll develop the knowledge and tools necessary to uphold excellence in competition.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Understanding the International Technical Rules System – Grasp the core principles that reward skillful fencing over chaotic exchanges.

  • Tactical Decision-Making – Learn how to identify and prevent common pitfalls like double hits before penalties occur.

  • Judging Fundamentals – Study scoring benchmarks, penalties, and the structure behind fair and efficient tournament operations.

  • Level I Certification – Participants will work towards level I certification through the weekend.

Head Instructor: Maestro Francesco Lodà – Programme Director, Rapier Head Coach of Italian Fencing Federation

Date: Friday, November 7, 2025

Location: Newman’s Castle

Time: TBD (Classes will begin at 1:00 PM)

Duration: 90 minutes

All class attendees must also purchase a Fencing Student/Competitor Pass.

Level I and higher certified judges will receive a rebate of $50 towards their general admission ticket after having overseen 30 rounds. They will also receive a small stipen of $1 for each additional round judged. Judges still in progress for receiving their certification not be eligible to receive a rebate on their admission; however, they will receive a stipend of $0.50 for each round judged.
